Lord, Come Where You Are Not Known

Session 12, St. Paul 101

If you haven’t read any other reflection in the pope’s seminar on St. Paul, at least read last week’s session.

It’s beautiful and timely as we approach the feast of Christ the King and the start of Advent. “What,” Benedict inquires of St. Paul, “does it mean to wait for the Lord? What is the relation between our present time, the time of the Church, and the time when we will definitively be with Jesus?”

The deepest meaning of the Resurrection is the assurance that whatever happens,

at the end,... READ MORE

Thituation Ethicths

What would you do?

So we’re having a bit of a dilemma around here and I’m curious to see how you would handle a similar situation.

Our son, we’ll call him “Augie,” has this tooth. It’s a loose tooth, a disconcertingly loose front tooth that has been hanging by a thread for about five days. It needs to come out.

In order to touch this tooth, and try to remove it, I have to bribe my son. Yesterday, I paid “Augie” one Starburst candy for the opportunity to wiggle his tooth five times. And yes, I’ll admit (with only... READ MORE

What Would You Take?

If you had to evacuate your home in minutes, what would you grab?

This past weekend, my mom and I visited Southern California and spent Saturday at Disneyland.  I hope to share a few photos of our trip this week, but today, a more serious topic is on my heart.

As you’ve likely heard, horrific wildfires are ravaging Southern California this week.  The picture you see here was taken at Disneyland on Saturday - although we were a safe distance from the fire, the sky over Disneyland had an apocalyptic hue and ash “rained” down on us all day.  It felt sort of wrong... Motrin Messes Up

Oh, my aching head!

Have you seen this controversial new Motrin ad about baby wearing?

Behold, the power of the mom blog!

Over the weekend, the uproar caused in the mom blogosphere (and especially on Twitter) over the perceived condescension and misinformation in this ad led to Motrin‘s decision to remove the ad from their website.

I read a rundown of the Motrin-Mom controversy (including response from Motrin spokespersons). I also read a collection of reasons to feel outraged in Baby Wearing International’s official response... READ MORE

Dad Not Home?

Getting through it

One of the areas in which our family is incredibly fortunate is my husband’s job.

He is well-compensated for work he finds both stimulating and enjoyable, his commute is a mere fifteen minutes, he has flexible hours, and he rarely has to work more than forty of them in a week.

I discovered recently that I have not been properly appreciating the last part of that deal.

Bryan’s team is working on a project that has a looming deadline, and he’s been putting in a huge number of hours on it: going... READ MORE

Word Love

My devotion to language

Language is an incredible thing.

I’ve thought so for as long as I can remember.  I think my devotion to A Child’s Garden of Verses and the poetry of A.A. Milne began almost at birth.  My mother tells a story of a barely two-year-old me describing my sister as she learned to crawl: “She’s eating the meadow flowers!”

When I first discovered Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” some years later, I had to memorize it immediately.  I didn’t care that half the words made no sense at all; the tones and cadence... READ MORE

Netflix to stop re-selling used DVDs

If you are a member of Netflix, you are probably aware that they regularly offer used DVDs for sale at discounted prices.

I’ve just learned that after November 30 of this year, they will no longer be offering this service. If someone on your Christmas list is a movie fan, you might want to check out their available titles now before it’s too late.

PS: If you are looking for a Catholic alternative to Netflix, please consider PiusMedia.com. They offer totally clean and Catholic-themed online DVD rentals for education and entertainment purposes. They support what we do here at Faith and Family with their advertising dollars. Check them out!

Self-buttering Bread

sometimes mistakes turn out all right
http://imagineannie.wordpress.com/2007/08/29/brioche/

It’s gotten cold here in Washington, DC.

As we live in a drafty Victorian built shortly after the Civil War, cold weather means my daughter and I retreat to the kitchen many Sunday afternoons to get a leg up on the week’s cooking and baking --and be able to feel our feet and hands.

Yesterday one of our projects was brioche --those feathery-light little loaves that are traditionally served with a top-knot as in this photo. (We usually use traditional rectangular pans, however.)

We were distracted... READ MORE

Tools For Re-Evangelization

Catholic & pro-life resources

One positive and nearly universal response I’ve seen to the election results is a Catholic commitment to get serious about re-evangelization and pro-life education.

Here are some exciting new projects I’ve stumbled across recently that might interest you for their nimble, “hip” (for lack of a better term) and non-threatening approach.

1. Catholics Come Home. Perhaps like me you saw some of the powerful videos at Catholics Come Home when the site first launched.

Even more impressive are the... READ MORE
